Thank you, Community Star. I was unaware that this was a problem with the font but thank you so much for your info. I have followed the advice re removing duplicate fonts but find that my spreadsheets are all done with Times New Roman. This font, although not being duplicated and also being present in Apple fonts, does not appear in the Xcel drop down list of fonts. Is there a way of making Xcel able to use this font? Or does it mean that my Times New Roman font is damaged? Excel:Mac 2011 – On the Tables tab of the ribbon, click the arrow next to the New command and then choose Insert Table with Headers. Which fonts are available to which programs depends on which Fonts folder the font is installed in. I find it easiest for my feeble mind to look at it this way even if it isn't 100% technically accurate. There are basically 4 levels of fonts folders; • Application Level -- Fonts installed here are available only to that particular program or suite of programs. However, those fonts are available to any User who can run the program. • User Level -- Fonts installed here are available to any programs used by that User Account but not to other User Accounts [unless installed there as well], even if running the same programs. • Root Level -- Fonts installed here are available to all Users & all programs they are able to use. • System Level -- Required & used by the OS, but also may be available to some apps. This one is best not tampered with:-) It depends on where TNR is installed, but I would expect that it should be universally available. If you've followed the procedure j.e. Linked you to you may need to go one step beyond that. Since you're running OS X 10.6.x it should be relatively simple. E with accent word for mac. I was referring to the Font Book application (to which I was directed by the previous respondent in his 'font weeding' link) when I said that Times New Roman font was present in Apple fonts. I don't know where or how to access the different levels of fonts to which you refer or what to do when I have accessed them. I followed your advice and deleted the Office 2011 font cache, I also repaired disk permissions and restarted but Times New Roman and some other fonts are still absent from the font list in all of the Office applications. When I open previously saved documents in Office 2011 they continue to open with blank cells/ pages. I notice that in Excel in the drop down fonts list, there is a folder marked Windows friendly fonts. If I select the whole document and then choose a Windows friendly font, the contents of all the cells appear. Not ideal but if I change every document that I open to a windows friendly font then my problem is sorted. I have also set set my font style to a Windows friendly font so any new docs I create shouldn't give me this problem again.
